Call thisa little bit of pre-PR for one of the West’s most intreguing art shows that is not associated with any kind of museum, art center or gallery! Yes, this DIY show, in it’s third year being called NadaDada Motel, is redolent of Burning Man in its anarchic spirit of anything goes as well as in the quality of the art from the sacred to the profane.
I’ve posted three digital mixed media pieces that were created for Nada Motel, as last year’s event was christened. Not only will I have those prints for sale and a limited number of orders for the work printed on canvas, but I will also have some great posters by Cherie Hacker from her "Sex Sells, Art Starves" series, Jewlery by Cyn Stones and a video installation. Cynthia Burdick, artist behind Cyn Stones is also an actor, like myself, and we’ll be performing some scenes from "Dancing with Desire: A Poetic Fandango with the Erotic and the Bawdy’! It will be before the burlesque.
NadaDada runs from June 18th to the 21st at the El Cortez Hotel, 2nd and Arlington in downtown Reno, NV. Hope we see you there!

I decided to start with the crayon first on this one. It’s a technique that I haven’t tried, but like very much. I usually start with lighter tones of watercolor, and add the crayon last. The idea hit me as I was studying some finished work yesterday. It appeared to me that the crayon marks were a bit too heavy on some of the paintings, so this seemed like a good idea.
At first the crayon was a bit too bold and heavy, but once I started adding watercolors, they started to blend nicely. I even used straight water to blend the crayons which started to have a watercolor type quality.
That’s all for now. Thanks for stopping by.

AN ART EXHIBIT TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING: SAMUEL FORMICA FINDS A USE FOR THOSE OLD CORKS. Philadelphia, PA, June 5, 2009… PINOT, the popular wine accessories superstore in Old City, announces a special exhibition presenting the works of nationally acclaimed painter Samuel J. Formica. The art opening will take place on June 5th the first Friday in June. First Friday in Old City, is a monthly event that takes place on the first Friday of every month, attracting art lovers of all kinds who enjoy the neighborhood’s 40-plus galleries. Most of the galleries stay open until 9 p.m. Formica’s work came to prominence in 2003 when his painting Looking to the Future became part of the Ben Franklin Tercentenary Exhibit and was lauded by US presidents, including Bill Clinton, George H.W Bush and Gerald Ford for its powerful depiction of America’s history. This stunning painting is on display at the Franklin Institute, and has been published in numerous books and magazines including Ben Franklin In Search Of A Better World by Yale University Press. In 2007 Samuel was chosen one of the top 200 painters in America by Kennedy publishing. On June 5th, PINOT will be sharing another side of Formica’s work — his love of wine. Formica began collecting wine corks ten years ago while working as a bartender at Ristorante Panorama, an Italian restaurant in Philadelphia with a world class wine bar. One day in 2004, he got an idea for a series of wine paintings that would utilize the corks he had collected. The result: LeQuattro Stagione del Vino, four separate paintings depicting the four seasons of wine. Each of the four paintings measures 36” x 64” and is made up of 48 small canvasses. Dense in texture and rich in color his careful composition has led him to international recognition. Eight paintings including the Quattro Stagione series will be on display at Pinot throughout the month of June; this will be the first time in more than ten years that a group of Formica’s works has been exhibited. The artist will be signing special limited-edition lithographs prints designed exclusively for PINOT to celebrate their up-coming 3 year anniversary. Wine and cheese will be served.
PINOT is gaining popularity among Philadelphia wine lovers for its wide variety of corkscrews, stemware, wine furniture, one-of-a-kind wine caddies and custom wine cellars–- as the tagline states: “everything but the grape.” In 2008 PINOT, located at 227 Market Street, was awarded Philadelphia Magazine’s coveted Best of Philly ® award for Best Specialty Shop. PINOT is also home of The Wine School at PINOT, the Old City branch of The Wine School of Philadelphia. For more information, call 215-627-WINE (9463) or visit www.PinotBoutique.com.

Broken Promises – Image c Lynda Lehmann
In the decay of our cultural institutions we find images that evoke the core of human suffering. Privation, need, fear, despair, insanity, and hopelessness. For me, the lesson in viewing such places is that by seeing scenes that can be described as either spiritually or physically ugly, we see the brighter things. Paradox is so deeply built into the human experience that by its very nature, it teaches us to look at things from a wider perspective. "Holistically," as one of my revered Art Education professors at Penn State University used to say.
Here are a few photos from the grounds of Kings Park Psychiatric Center, that I shot last month. The old state hospital is on what are now the grounds of Nissequogue River State Park in Suffolk County. You can wander the grounds but the buildings, for understandable reasons, are off-limits. Indeed they are crumbling, and would be dangerous to approach. It seems to me that New York State would do well to either reclaim these building for future generations, or destroy them. They’re an attractive haven for wayward teenagers, I’m sure. And that in itself is dangerous. Perhaps they could be used to make a summer day camp, or sold to artists to renovate? Or just razed to increase the usable space of the existing park?

I enjoy walking there because ghosts of the past seem to whisper on the stale wind coming out of the dark windows. I enjoy the place visually, as a photographer. And as a bit of local history. But in hard economic times in particular, I would think the space, if not the buildings themselves, could be reclaimed for public use of some sort.

For me these structures evoke all the pain and torment of mental illness, for those who can’t function in society and have so much behavioral difficulty that they need to be institutionalized. Sadly, mental health services have been cut drastically in the last three decades, and many people cannot get the care or guidance that they need.

I’ve sometimes heard people say that there is beauty in ugliness. My interpretation is that in the duel, yin-yang nature of things, it’s the ugly stuff that informs our consciousness and makes us lean, or strive, towards the light. And towards beauty, of course.
Many ramifications of duality lend themselves to discussion: the nature of paradox itself, good versus evil, the meaning and purpose of human institutions, our perceptions of the world, etc. What do you think? Do you ponder the contradictions of life? Are you comfortable with perceiving paradox? Or do you lean more towards absolutes–the black and white polarities–instead of standing with uncertainty in the "gray zone"?
