 Around the middle of April, I was notified that I had been selected as one of 30 artists in the Southwest to create a Burro for Gallery 408 in Carrizozo, New Mexico. Northern New Mexico has its Painted Ponies and for the last three years, Gallery 408 has been producing burros for their annual Burro Serenade. This is a live auction and exhibit of the completed burros proceeds of which benefit animals rescue organizations in the state.

I started with a naked burro. I wanted to do a burro carrying a lost and tied child home. A Rescue Burro.

I asked one of my younger students to be a model and allow me to take plaster casts of her body. Weeks later after working 4,6 and sometimes 8 hours a day the burro was complete. As I built the body and attached it to the burro, painted and decorated it all, the magic began to emerge.

 

 This became an obsession, as I had never done anything like this before!

 


 I am quite proud of the result, truly a bit of magic. 
The burro will be delivered to the gallery mid-June where it will remain on display until the week before Thanksgiving and the auction.

I feel an overwhelming feeling of "freedom" when I start a new painting, freedom of painting anything that fulfill my senses anything that makes me feel good, painting is like feeling free of the issues that affect all of us on a daily basis, freedom of feeling scare, freedom of feeling angry or sad, when I put the first brush strokes of paint on my canvas the time just goes by without me being aware of what time it is, I can paint for hours on end, I forget what is around me and all it is on my mind is the figure, flower or landscape that I am trying to paint. I am sure that a lot of you fellow artists have felt the same way when you paint.

I started this piece with green crayon that lightly outlined the figure. Once the subject was comfortably added to the paper, I added some yellow ocher and aliziron crimson to achieve the skin tones and some cerulean blue  to the background. I finished with some dark green-gray to the hair and some additional green crayon to enhance a few details.

The word God evokes a memory…some connection to the past. When I was young my mother said “God loves you”. So God became the source of love. My mother said, “I love you”. The way that she showed this became the idea of what love is. Even when naughty and after a beating, my parents would re-strengthen the idea of love. Somebody loved me and this gave security and hope.

 

In the family Christian church, the priest would say “In the bible it says that God loves you…through his only son”. So the God my mom spoke of, then became more authoritative, because the guy in charge of  the church, a place where people listened with great reference to a priest, could lay down laws found in a bible that people showed great respect for.

So God took on all these meanings. Judge, respect, reverence, all-knowing, security, faith, hope, peace, understanding, omnipresent, omnipotent, Jesus Christ the son of God. God makes man in his own image.

 One day a question came up ”…but where did God come from?” and no answer could satisfy…”and why could it not satisfy?”… because it became evident that nobody knew exactly. Some even said that it might be too far back to remember. But God is omnipresent. “oh, ummm”…silence…huh? 

So God became unknown too.

 

It also became evident that there was not only a Christian God, but God for all religions. And on and on… and always about me and God.

 

A more intensive investigation shows that the story you get told is a story you can believe in too. All that is necessary are faith, hope and trust in God’s son who is also God. And these became acutely developed through application which in turn became known as ‘living the Faith’. And so I was living the Faith.

 

All the above always requires a ‘someone’ who applies the Truth of God. There was always a ‘me’ who was separate from God, who comes into union with God through the son. No one in the church ever asked “who am I?”. It was always obvious that you, a person, a soul, returns to God through the son.

 

Okay…but who am I?…Don’t you believe?…that question shows that you don’t believe and those that don’t believe, the unbelievers, they are tricked by the devil…do you fancy eternity in hell? Hell, no!

 

So God became good and bad became evil…God remained unknown while known through a teaching. And all the story about Lucifer the angel of light who pretends to be God….and on and on.

 

But what about me?…and what is a soul…have you ever seen a soul?…ummm no…but…Ha!

 

Who am I really?…I mean really…without all the story given about it. Am I God?…how do I know God without a story?

This question remains unanswered. Every thought coming up… to whom does this appear?…me…so who am I?…for what seems like a moment, no thoughts come. Yet I am here…Ha!

 

And where do thoughts come from anyway?…they are only known when they are happening. What is this?…existence…being….awareness. Everything that appears cannot be conscious of without awareness….even the thought ‘I’ is aware of. Where’s the separation in this….none. Who gets to suffer this life….no answer. Who gets to be responsible…. no answer. And if no one is responsible then the world will tilt, there will be total anarchy…blah blah blah. Oh yeh!…take a look at the truth of this fear…who is having it?…no answer.. its all blah blah.

But with the story of God where someone has to repent, someone has to be saved, someone is a soul and some one suffers all of this…well, this is a story, another play of light.

 

I prefer to call it ‘Intelligence’ because ‘God’ looks too much like a story for ‘me’. Intelligence is this happening without there having to be an identity called ‘me’. This happening is a play of light, an illusion that looks very real and is very real too…yet it is but a reflection, an image appearing. And its unconditional…because everything comes and goes of its own accord.

 Creating cash flow is what happens after you leave the studio. For most artist the studio is a play ground, where you can dream and create works of art. Once an artist leaves the studio the real work begans. We artist know, selling art work isn’t easy, it’s not like food or clothing, something everyone needs. Most art is bought by a magical impulsive reaction, to a piece of art.  You can hire an agent or have a gallery  represent your art. But in times of financial insecurities, most artist can’t afford an agent, and most galleries are having a rough time making sales. Even artist with more than one gallery representing them, have to come up with creative ways of making sales. An artist can have studio shows, create affordable works of art, do workshops, or move to where the cheese is. I’m currently creating, multi methods of creating  cash flow. Since October 2008 I have sold art work from four alternative spaces, compared to one gallery sale. I’m having my second in studio show. and I’m moving to where the cheese is. If art is your only source of income, you might consider doing art subjects you normally wouldn’t do, like the painting your aunt wanted, you know , to hang over her sofa. And remember save yourself some creative fun time too!

Why Record Your Life’s Work?

It is well known that most of someone’s life experience, thoughts, innovations, or even inventions do die with them when they leave their life experience. Worse, we all suffer having to re-live these hardships or never realize the potential of their innovations. Thus, this is one of the travesties of life and death and a challenge for the future of humanity. Perhaps, this is why I recommend writing down your thoughts, ideas, concepts, and innovations for future generations.

Not long ago someone asked me why I was doing so much writing in early retirement; “Are you recording your thoughts because you know how fragile human life and health is.”

Luckily I am in perfect health, and mind, and yes, this could be one of the reasons I am writing it all down, although I generally never do anything for only “one” reason as I like to line up 100s of ducks and shoot them all with a high powered laser. This saves time, as you can solve problems with many components with simplicity.

Indeed, to answer your question, “YES” that is one of the major reasons, as I read something that Leonardo da Vinci once said, “I only have one regret, that I might die before finishing all my projects or writing down all my ideas” yes, that really is a bummer. Much like the burning of the ancient Alexandria Library; Terrible. In the future this problem will be solved, by downloading one’s brain or like the theory of recording an entire life.

Imagine how many great minds took it all with them, and how much further humanity could be ahead, had we had this information? Think on this.
